Take the Plunge and Embrace the Swim Brief

More guys are starting to come around on the comfort, practicality, and body positivity that comes from throwing on a swim brief.

Take the Plunge and Embrace the Swim Brief

Well, it’s undeniable, fellas: Speedos aren’t just for European beaches and Pride parades anymore. Swim briefs have found their way back into the mainstream, with form-fitting swimsuits making waves in menswear, one pair at a time. While swim briefs have long been stereotyped (within the U.S., at least), more guys are starting to come around on the comfort, practicality, and body positivity that comes from throwing on a swim brief.

One common myth about swim briefs is that only the fittest guys should be wearing one; but head to any beach in Southern France and you’ll see a variety of body shapes sunbathing in briefs. This preconception endures because the Speedo is most often seen in American popular culture as worn by top athletes during the Summer Olympics, which isn’t a real representation of the everyday wearer. The fact is, whether you have a six pack or a full keg, a swim brief is a great option as long as you’re confident in it. There is a liberation in embracing the body you’re in—and that confidence comes through to others.

We’ve left aside one crucial part of wearing a swim brief—the bulge. With the tight-fitting fabric and form-fitting pouch, you’re bound to feel a bit exposed. One good way to avoid feeling overexposed is to size up when possible. This will allow for a bit of extra space in the pouch to avoid it fitting too snugly. But, by its very nature, a swim brief is going to be tight, so don’t think too much about it.

Finally, if you’re new to the style, try going for a solid black brief or a patterned option. Both of these will help conceal anything you may not want on display, creating a sort of trompe-l’oeil around your junk to hide some of the more noticeable parts that come with wearing a more form-fitting style of swimwear. Here are a few of our favorite swim brief options for those eager to take the plunge this summer.

Speedo Men's Solar 2" Brief

It’s no small feat to become a shorthand for swim briefs, but Speedo has accomplished this over the last century through its one-two punch of making great products and being steadfast in its overall product offering. Beloved by swimming pool peacocks and Olympic swimmers alike, Speedo’s brief provides all the support you need to keep comfortable and look your best. And with twenty-one colors to choose from, there’s an option for everyone’s personal style, while still diving into (see what we did there) the athletic side of this trend.

CDLP Swim Brief

CDLP has already cornered the market on premium underwear and men’s basics, so it’s no surprise that their swim briefs are also a top-notch option. Being a Swedish brand, their styles prioritize sleek simplicity, and their briefs are no exception. Minimally designed, the side width is slightly thicker for a bit more coverage, while the jersey-knit construction is both flattering and comforting for all-day wear.

Todd Snyder Mykonos Brief

Topping most lists for swim briefs among menswear circles is Todd Snyder’s Mykonos brief. While the brief itself follows the same basic pattern as others in the market, it’s the small details which make this such a popular option. The concealed drawstring makes for a more streamlined look, while the interior pocket is the perfect addition for running up to the bar with a few Euros tucked away instead of taking that pesky wallet.

Nike Swim HydraStrong

Nike’s Swim HydraStrong is as much a piece of sportswear as it is a stylish option for a swim brief. With the slightest bit of color blocking, it’s a bit more interesting than a monochromatic option, while still remaining a bit more conservative than many briefs on the market.

Frescobol Carioca Sunga

Brazil has over 4,400 miles of coastline, so it’s no surprise that their answer to the swim brief, the Sunga, has ostensibly become a national costume. Frescobol Carioca’s iteration pairs sporty colorblocking with a more generous cut across the sides and back, with a smaller pouch in the front for an overall fit that doesn’t sacrifice comfort for style.
