These Outdoor Adventures Don’t Sacrifice Luxury

Get away from it all doesn't have to mean cold showers and sleeping bags.

These Outdoor Adventures Don’t Sacrifice Luxury

Ever wish you were an outdoorsy person, but prefer the comforts of a soft bed and hot water? Glamping is the gateway drug for those who aren’t entirely comfortable sleeping outdoors, but want to safely get into the wild. These are luxe stays—king beds, ensuite bathrooms, kitchens, and skylights. They can put you in enchanted places surrounded by forests and mountains, with most of the comforts of a hotel. Below are five of our favorite places for luxe adventures in the wild.

Under Canvas, Multiple Locations

If you’ve ever looked at a tent and thought “hard pass,” then Under Canvas is for you. The brand is synonymous with luxe camping in the safari tradition. Their tents are furnished and include wood-burning stoves or fireplaces, along with S’mores by the fire pit. Many of their locations are tied to national parks, so you can camp surrounded by the red rock of Moab near Arches National Park, the lush forests of the Great Smoky Mountains, the otherworldly landscapes of Zion National Park, and Columbia River Gorge in Washington. Their award-winning resorts offer seasonal menus and guided outdoor adventures. This is literally the easiest way to find that inner outdoors person you’ve wanted to channel.

AutoCamp, Multiple Locations

Have you ever wanted to camp in a classic Airstream, but don’t have a large enough vehicle for towing, or an Airstream? Hilton’s AutoCamp has you covered, in iconic destinations including Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and Cape Cod. They get you outdoors with all the class of a boutique luxury stay. Depending on the location, guests can enjoy guided hikes, rock climbing, stargazing, and national park tours. They also have tents and cabins, but the Airstreams are the real draw here.

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort, Ohio

Treehouses are childlike escapes, and there’s nothing like sleeping high up in the forest canopy. And if that tree house comes with bedrooms and lofts, a full bath, heating and air conditioning, and an outdoor shower, then it becomes a magical adult adventure. Mohicans Treehouse Resort south of Cleveland is a fantastic escape, and where else can you find an Airstream being used as a treehouse? Mohicans has even lured in the likes of Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves. For day-trip adventures, Mohicans is near Mohican State Park and just over an hour from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just south of Cleveland.

Orca Island Cabins, Alaska

Off-the-grid and deeply connected to the wilderness in Seward, Orca Island Cabins doesn’t have wifi, but they have everything else that fuels wanderlust on Instagram, including yurts.  At Orca, the secluded yurts have comfortable beds, futons, full kitchens, ensuite bathrooms, skylights, and standing showers with hot water.. This is a place to disconnect without losing luxury. They are in the protected water of Humpy Cove, and the only way in is by water taxi. Guests can fish, kayak, row, paddle board, and snorkel.

Sandy Pines Campground, Maine

Glamping in a Conestoga chuck wagon at Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport is enough to make any old-timey prospector jealous. Sandy Pines has something for everyone: couples and family glamp tents, unique options like the Shepherd’s Hut, Glass House, Conestoga wagon, cozy and rustic hideaway huts, as well as boutique couples cottages and family cottages. It’s a great area to hike, or bring your kayak or paddleboard, or they’ll set you up with one to rent.
