If you think Disney is all fun and games, take a look at Disney Research’s latest development, an eerily realistic humanoid bust that has a gaze and eye characteristics that mimic an actual human being. The company works on cutting-edge technology for the Walt Disney Company, and this particular one creates the illusion of a living being by virtue of the way it can gaze and make eye contact as a sign of social interaction. The goal of the project is to create a system that copies the human gaze and all the emotions that go with it. While the fact that it has no artificial skin covering it makes it all the more creepy, at least it’s wearing a shirt. The James Bond “Jaws” teeth certainly don’t help to calm observers. Nevertheless, it’s a fascinating achievement that shows how far things have come in mimicking human expressions.
