Sailors didn’t exactly comfort themselves in the arms of mermaids during long stints at sea. It was booze that got them through, in reality. This particular bottle of whisky comes from the British cargo ship the SS Politician that was grounded back in 1941. Most of the stash (264,000 bottles) was meant for customers in Jamaica and New Orleans was taken off the British government’s hands in unauthorized fashion after the ship ran aground. This all occurred during what was known as “Whisky Galore”, but this bottle was retrieved much later from the surrounding waters by diver George Currie in 1987. It’s now up for sale at Scotland’s Grand Whisky Auction, but it’s not suitable for consumption, which is a cryin’ shame. The winning bidder will get a piece of history and will also receive a vintage diving helmet and bricks from the SS Politician. Talk about conversation pieces.
