Whether he’s putting his talents to use on movies about giant, monster-fighting robots or creepy horror films, Guillermo del Toro has always had a unique take on the world of fantasy that walks the line between believable and completely absurd. His latest masterpiece, The Shape of Water, is an other-worldly fairy tale about a classified government experiment that two women discover while working at a lab during Cold War era America. You’re going to have to watch the trailer to discover what, exactly, that classified experiment is, but even the trailer makes it pretty clear from the beginning that the powerful story and effects that made Pan’s Labyrinth great will be on full display in The Shape of Water as well. It was written and directed by del Toro, and stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins among others. The Shape of Water hits theaters on December 8.
