There’s just something about vintage advertising and production methods that’s inherently cool. Take this production video of Matchbox Cars from 1965 for instance. Unearthed and uploaded by British Pathé (a media and licensing company with quite a collection of vintage reels), this short clip is equal parts marketing material, behind-the-scenes exposition and production porn. With elements of the assembly line, the drafting and modeling processes, prototype creation, casting, paint, curing and final assembly you really get a feel for everything that went into those iconic tiny cars when they were produced in Hackney, London, long before the age of computer aided design and modern build processes. The short clip does get a little cut off at the end, but we can’t be too upset about that happening with archival footage that’s more than half a century old. Once you watch Matchbox Cars get made the old-fashioned way you’re definitely going to want to dig out your childhood collection for comparison purposes.
