Other Biz Bios Every Guy Should See

We’re not sure whether the new “Jobs” movie that comes out this weekend will be any good or not, but if it happens to be a bomb, it won’t be for lack of a story. The eccentricities and talents of Steve Jobs have been discussed ad nauseum. That said, the story of the Apple king is far from the first interesting business story ever put on film. If you want to check out some business biographies that are seriously fascinating, here are some perfect starters.

Shadow Billionaire

For what seems like a very ho-hum business, DHL sure had an interesting founder. “Shadow Billionaire” tells the story of Larry Hillblom and it picks up right after he vanished over the Pacific. What follows is a story of a secrecy, scandal, and lots and lots of sex. Amazon Instant iTunes Netflix

Candyman: The David Klein Story

Unfortunately, not every rags to riches story ends in riches. “Candyman: The David Klein Story” has the makings of a warm and fuzzy movie about the man who invented the Jelly Belly jelly bean, and while David Klein did do that, his story doesn’t end up the way he dreamed it would. In fact, it ruined his life. Amazon Instant iTunes Netflix

Tucker: The Man and His Dream

If you believe Preston Tucker, this is a classic David versus Goliath story. The little man challenges the big auto manufacturers of his day with what he believes is the car of the future. (Think Homer Simpson and his creation “The Homer” . . . kind of.)  Amazon Instant iTunes

“Salesman” was as relevant to the actual door-to-door salesmen of days gone by as it is now for anyone in a sales department. The capitilist theme that runs throughout the film and the pressure of closing a deal didn’t die with the profession and the movie is somewhat haunting in that regard. Amazon Instant

Rogue Trader

If you don’t know the story behind the collapse of Barings Bank, “Rogue Trader” is worth a watch. The film stars Ewan McGregor who plays Nick Leeson, a former broker. It details Leeson’s secret dealings that basically bankrupted Barings. Amazon Instant Netflix

How To Make A Book With Steidl

Not every job requires a suit and tie and in “How To Make A Book With Steidl” you get taken out of the standard office. The German documentary chronicles the life of famed printer and publisher, Gerhard Steidl. What seems like a fairly boring business gets a shot of life from the man’s passion for his work. Amazon Instant Netflix

The Social Network

We’re going to go ahead and assume you’ve at least heard about “The Social Network.” Just because it’s mainstream doesn’t mean it’s any less brilliant. With amazing music, a great performance by Jesse Eisenberg, and heavyweights like Sorkin and Fincher behind it, if you haven’t seen it yet, seriously do so. Amazon Instant iTunes

This Indian film from 2007 is really a sprawling epic of a business movie. It’s based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani the founder of Reliance Industries and his insatiable desire for success at all costs. Amazon Instant

A Man’s Story

Why wouldn’t you want to watch a documentary about the person some have called, “The coolest man on earth”? “A Man’s Story” is a detailed look into the personal life and business of fashion designer, Ozwald Boateng. In it, you’ll find the same personality and charisma that has driven other entrepreneurs to fame only on perhaps a whole new level. Amazon Instant iTunes Netflix
