Whether you’re looking for a reliable bike to tackle the trails or a survival bike capable of outrunning danger, the BMW GS is a great option thanks to its combination of German engineering and durability. One thing the marquee lost sight of over the decades, however, is the classic, stripped down styling that contributed to its popularity, and that’s where Davey Whitcraft of Whitcraft Services comes in. This is their 001 BMW R1150 Custom Adventure Bike. As he wrote on Silodrome, “The goal of this bike was to create a highly minimal, lightweight and classically styled BMW GS that would not only be reliable and rideable, but look good doing it.” The pictures alone are indication enough he nailed it. Built around a 2004 Twin Spark edition of the BMW R1150 ‘Oilhead’ motor, this bike is equal parts ground-up rebuild and completely custom creation. From new fuel and electrical systems, to modern headlights and gauges, just about everything on this bike is unlike what you’d expect to find on a traditional GS, which is what makes it a truly unique ride.
