IKEA Snap Together Furniture

We’re not trying to brag, but we never encountered the frustration with assembling IKEA furniture that everyone complains about. Part of the attraction of IKEA was the sense of accomplishment we had after our bed/bookshelf/desk/table was finally put together. Evidently we’re in the minority though, because IKEA is introducing the wedge dowel, a new joint type that makes putting their furniture together much easier. With the new joint, their wooden pieces won’t require any screws or bolts and their associated tools. Instead, the ribbed joints simply snap together, allowing them to be disassembled and reassembled without any loss in stability or quality. This is meant to fit with modern lifestyles, allowing people to move and not need to worry about breaking or losing pieces. Though this is where things got a little weird, since IKEA’s range and supply manager, Jesper Brodin, specifically cited divorce rates. We’re not sure if that’s out of context or what, but we can think of a half dozen other examples that don’t have an inherent ax to grind. Also, if you’re getting kicked out of the house during a divorce, is your table the thing you’re worried about? Whatever reason you’re moving, the new joint should make things just a little bit easier.
