Groot might have nightmares, but the “grown” chairs, tables, and lamps at Full Grown Farm in Derbyshire, UK are simply fascinating. Rather than using any traditional woodworking skills, these pieces are formed as the tress from which they’re birthed grow. They’re the handiwork of Gavin and Alice Munro. The couple manipulates them over the course of years, and the result is functional furniture that’s artistic in a truly organic way. Though it may be painstakingly long to create a single piece, there’s no furniture-making process that’s this environmentally friendly. Gavin refers to it as “zen 3D printing”, inspired by his own back brace to straighten his posture. It takes years to make them, and you have to be willing to wait for years for a commissioned piece. The Munros plan to expand their operation and take on bigger projects, but they continue to “make” their remarkable furniture pieces for purchase. Just don’t have your most corpulent relative sit on that chair you waited 10 years for.
