Heinz has finally approved Don Draper’s Pass the Heinz ads from Mad Men. The original ads that his clients at Heinz weren’t in any way pleased with featured close-ups of fries, a cheeseburger and a slice a steak all just waiting for a squirt of ketchup with the simple tagline “Pass the Heinz.” Each of the iconic ads was recreated from the ground up by firm David Miami to look exactly the same as the ads created by Sterling Cooper Draper Price. The modern iterations of the ads will run on billboards in NYC, the New York Post and Heinz’s social media, with the fries also getting a run in Variety. David Miami is sharing creative credit with SCDP for the ads (Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner signed off on the idea), and even if you don’t get the Mad Men connection the ads are still effective. It’s the latest example of life imitating art imitating life.
