As good as the current Toyota Highlander is, there was room for, well, more room. Since the brand pretty much kept the back two rows in the Highlander the same size as the previous generation, some buyers called foul. The answer has arrived in the form of the Grand Highlander. It’s bigger, better-styled, and it even has the option of the powerful and efficient top dog Hybrid Max powertrain that mates a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a pair of electric motors and a six-speed automatic transmission for 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Highlander will also tow up to 5,000 pounds. The body loses the smaller Highlanders’ curvy fenders and tapered front end for flatter sheetmetal and a more upright fascia. The result is a more truck-like appearance that’s actually more attractive than its smaller sibling. While there’s no word on interior dimensions, the Grand Highlander should prove to be bigger for families and cargo, coupled with that famous Toyota build quality and reliability. Look for the new SUV to hit showrooms later this year.
