Dogfish Head is known for (as their motto would suggest) off-centered ales. The latest Sam Calagione and crew concocted is Hoo Lawd, the hoppiest beer ever documented. As a little primer, the average IPA clocks in somewhere in the sub-100 IBU (International Bittering Units) range. Hoo Lawd is a tad higher, landing at 658 IBUs. While there are other beers that claim the title (Mikkeller’s 1000 IBU comes to mind), Hoo Lawd is the first with scientific confirmation of its hoppy prowess. Many claim the human threshold is around 100 IBUs, so if you want to find out for yourself, you can head to Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on December 2 to sample Hoo Lawd, as that’s when it’s being tapped.
