If the thought of a plant-based, 3D printed steak makes you want to run for cattle-covered hills, then take a look at this real beef ribeye created in the lab. Israel-based Aleph Farms, along with the Isreal Institue of Technology, just created the very first ribeye steak cultivated in a laboratory. Ooh, that sounds lip-smackin’ good, right? Well, at least the process and the science of it all are fascinating. The result is thanks to the use of 3D bioprinting of actual living cow cells. The cells grow, differentiate, and then interact with each other as they would in nature. The steak supposedly has the same consistency and flavor as meat directly from a cow. What this does, in effect, is eliminate the need to raise and slaughter cattle for beef production. The technology could theoretically produce various cuts of meat, too, but probably not the Porterhouse.
