Every year, Jim Murray–an equally loved and loathed critic on the world whisky scene–unveils his list of the best whiskies in the world. It led to a bottle of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye getting sold out internationally. Bottles of William Larue Weller becoming even harder to get your hands on than they were already. Murray’s spit and never swallow technique might draw criticism from armchair whiskey quarterbacks the world over, but this year, it’s led to a relatively affordable bottle being named best whisky in the world. For 2020, Murray’s best whisky honor goes to 1792 Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon. We’re not saying this because we have a number of 1792 Full Proof Store Picks waiting in the wings, or because we’re drinking a pour of it right now in its own honor, but this is an incredibly solid dram that deserves all the accolades it’s finally receiving. The first few runners up were all from Sazerac–the Buffalo Trace parent company, if you’re paying attention–and include William Larue Weller 125.7 proof and Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye 128.8 proof. Those are both great options for second and third place, but we’d be willing to argue with Murray over 2018 George T Stagg 124.9 taking one of those slots because that particular Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) release remains one of our absolute favorites. Jim Murray’s 2020 Whisky Bible will be released later this month, but you can read the full list of winners from the press release with the button below.
