Director Robert Eggers comes across like an industry veteran, having delivered a horrifying tone in 2016’s “The Witch”, and now comes back to the big screen with a tale of two men and the sea in “The Lighthouse” Starring a haggard and perfectly cast Willem Dafoe (who could pass as an angry Gorton’s fisherman) and Robert Pattinson in a role that’s far more mysterious and dark than Ed Cullen from Twilight. As the official trailer shows, the movie is shot completely in black and white, lending to its vintage look and feel. The two men inhabit the lighthouse for who knows how long (apparently, they have no clue, either) and find what appears to be camaraderie, suspicion, and a spiralling descent into madness. Eggers manages to pull off what critics view as enterprising filmmaking since it just received the coveted FIPRESCI Award at Cannes. The film debuts in theaters October 18th of this year.
