In 2015, Nike began work on a design challenge focused on transforming apparel. Nike’s senior design director for apparel special projects, Jarrett Reynolds, was intrigued by the idea of a slimline pack with a quick-deploy poncho that was easily deployed and repacked. Eventually the project ended up in the hands of frequent Nike collaborator and artist Tom Sachs who changed the idea from speculative exercise into functional NIKECRAFT project. At first glance it looks like a NASA-built fanny pack that doesn’t do much but look like a NASA-built fanny pack. But after you unhook one side and pull the tabs it literally explodes into a poncho that easily pulls over your head and snaps into a complete garment in a few quick movements. When you’re done, pull it back over your head, attach some fasteners, roll it up and slip it back into the pack it started in. We’ll be honest, we didn’t know we needed an exploding poncho until today, but now we really want one. Check out how it works in the video.
