The Best Advice from Reddit’s /r/LifeProTips

We’ve said it before, but our love for Reddit can’t be overstated. The self-titled “Front Page of the Internet” is our favorite place to browse, and whether we want the latest breaking news, some sweet EarthPorn, or just want to see what’s trending, we know Reddit is the place to go.

One of our favorite Reddit communities (or “Subreddits,” as they’re called) is /r/LifeProTips. It’s an entire sub dedicated to providing good advice and tips that can have immediate and significant impacts on our daily lives. Every page in /r/LifeProTips is brimming with really useful information, and we’re always learning something new.

Here is some of our favorite advice from /r/LifeProTips:

LPT: When posting your resume online for a specific job, copy the “looking for” section and paste in white font at the bottom of your resume. You place higher because you’re a “perfect match” and humans won’t notice when they read it.

This sub is full of helpful career advice, but this one is our favorite because it’s not common sense and is an easy way to give yourself a clear advantage during the application process—which is half the battle. The best part is that the comments section is filled with additional helpful advice from other users, like how to make the font smaller so recruiters and hiring managers won’t see it, or how to keep the text from coming up in a text search and copy of the whole document. LPT: If you want to learn a new language, figure out the 100 most frequently used words and start with them. Those words make up about 50% of everyday speech, and should be a very solid basis.

One of the most popular LPT threads to date with over 75k upvotes, this thread is vital for anyone looking to learn a second language, or at least be able to speak reasonably and not be too misunderstood while traveling abroad. Redditors commented that without things like proper verb conjugation or subject/object placement, it could be difficult to comprehend at times, but that knowing the very basics will be enough to get you by. LPT: When buying a blanket, always buy at least one size larger than your bed. It’s at least a hundred times more comfy.

This is another excellent LPT, but we’ll even take it a step further and say that when buying any bed furnishings—from blankets to bedspread sets—always size up because even though your full-size mattress is a full-size mattress, it may be too thick to use a standard full-size bedspread set. Sizing up ensures a proper fit every single time. Link

LPT: If you ever need a program you want for free (for example a video/photo editor) don’t search for “free,” search for “open source” to avoid limited trial versions, adverts and malware

In a world occupied by malware and spam emails, knowing how to get the things you need without jeopardizing your computer—or worse, your identity—is essential. The advice in this thread points out how to obtain free and usually safe open source programs that’ll help you accomplish your mission, whatever that mission is. Photo and video editing software, coding programs, video players; there are open source programs out there for everything. Link

LPT: Whenever you travel abroad bring a new soundtrack for each place you visit, preferably one you have never heard before. In the future, every time you listen to each soundtrack again they will bring you vivid memories of the places you have visited.

Why do we travel? For the experience, right? This thread puts the strong connection between emotion, cognition, and music into perspective. Not only does it make a lot of sense, but the comments section is a joy to peruse, because it’s full of people telling stories about their own travel soundtracks and the events they recollect from certain places when hearing certain songs. Great advice and wholesome story-telling? Count us in. Link

LPT: When stressing over something, use the 10-10-10 rule. Will it matter in 10 days? 10 months? 10 years? After getting some perspective, you’ll notice how very few things end up worth stressing over.

One of the best things about /r/LifeProTips is that a lot of them are common sense things that we tend to forget or overlook in our everyday lives. Case in point? This helpful nugget of wisdom reminding us that so many of the things that stress us out are only temporary, and the minute we take a step back and apply a logical evaluation, they become less impactful on our lives. And on the occasion something is deemed worthy of stressing over, we dedicate more time to it because we better understand the gravity of the situation. Link

LPT: If you are buying headphones/speakers, test them with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ It has the complete set of highs and lows in instruments and vocals.

Any fellow audiophiles in the room? We’re big on headphones, and this LPT informing us that “Bohemian Rhapsody” (A Queen classic) is the perfect song to test a pair of headphones to is awesome for a couple reasons. The first is that we’ll know the quality of the headphones we’re looking to purchase. The second is that we also get to be the weird guys in Best Buy rocking out and playing air guitar to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” That’s a win-win where we’re from. Of course, if you’re not interested in channeling your inner Freddie Mercury on the showroom floor, commentators also suggest actual audio testers that are specifically engineered to test the limits of an individual pair of headphones. LPT: When you sign up for anything online, put the website’s name as your middle name. That way when you receive spam/advert emails, you will know who sold your info.

We are always looking for ways to keep our information secure and private on the Internet, so this very popular LPT is absolutely genius. It won’t prevent your information from being sold in the first place, but it will show you who sold you out, and who you should or shouldn’t be doing business with in the future. Like Facebook, for instance! Link

LPT: Download Wifi Analyzer to determine what channel your router should broadcast its Wifi signal.

There was a lot of debate in the comments section of this thread as to whether or not it was really a LPT, but we’re sticking with it because we honestly had no idea. Wifi routers place users on several different channels on a spectrum of waves. But some channels are busier than others, which means no matter the internet speed plan you’re on, your internet is always being throttled. The original poster not only highlights the importance of a Wifi analyzer, but also provides explicit instructions on how to see what channel you’re on, how many users are on it with you, and how to change your channel. LPT:  When making nachos, put a tortilla underneath your chips to turn leftover toppings into a taco.

This one absolutely blew our minds. Take two of our favorite things—nachos and tacos—and use one to create the other. It’s like recycling, but with tacos. Tacocycling. Nachocycling? We don’t know, but we do know our nachos will never be the same again. Link
