What to Drink This Weekend: Nonalcoholic Sour

We’re slightly switching things up for this month’s column and we’ll be recommending a few mocktail recipes. Over the past few years, the Dry January trend has grown in popularity. If you aren’t participating yourself, you likely know someone who is. So, we picked out a booze-free mocktail for you to try out: the Nonalcoholic sour.

As it turns out, it’s pretty easy to make a mocktail version of your favorite whiskey sour. Swap out the booze for an NA whiskey and follow the same steps! This particular recipe from Barbuto’s John Dillon and is impressively easy to make.

Nonalcoholic Sour Ingredients

Spiritless Kentucky 74Kentucky 74 is the gold standard when it comes to NA whiskeys. The award-winning non-alcoholic distilled bourbon promises the same robust and smooth flavors of your favorite whiskey without the booze. So, if you’re looking to make a nonalcoholic whiskey drink, this option is a no-brainer. Ritual Zero and Monday also make NA whiskey if you were looking to experiment with other options.

Lemon Juice – As always, use fresh lemon juice in all of your cocktails and mocktails. Grab a few lemons and juice them before making your drink.

Simple Syrup – This particular recipe calls for a brown sugar simple syrup (made from equal parts brown sugar and water), but you can also opt for a straight-up simple syrup or a Demerara syrup. Just make sure to use equal parts sugar and water.

Bitters – You’ll want to use the classic Angostura bitters in this mocktail but the recipe also happens to call for Scrappy’s Bitters Firewater tincture. This unique addition will impart some of that alcoholic burn that you’d expect from a standard Whiskey Sour. Use a liberal amount – up to 15 drops to really get that pleasant, warming sensation in your mocktail.

Egg Whites – Lastly, to get that lovely froth on your Nonalcoholic sour, you can use egg whites or, as a vegan alternative, aquafaba aka chickpea water. Just get a can of chickpeas, drain it out and reserve the liquid. It actually froths up very nicely and shouldn’t impart any real flavor to your drink.

Nonalcoholic Sour Recipe

  1. Combine 2 ounces Kentucky 74, 1 ounce lemon juice, 3/4 ounce simple syrup, 1/2 ounce of egg whites, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to a cocktail shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
  2. Add ice and shake for an additional 10 seconds.
  3. Double strain into a coupe glass.
  4. Enjoy!
