In 1947, on the beach of Red Wharf Bay, Maurice Wilks, using the sand as a sketchpad, came up with the idea for the Land Rover, an off-road vehicle loosely based on the Jeep of the day. His vision ultimately became the Land Rover Defender. Sadly, due to safety regulations, the reign of the Defender will come to an end in 2015. To honor its legacy, Land Rover and those close to the model have built a special edition—Defender 90 Number 2,000,000. Slated to be auctioned at Bonhams in December, the two millionth Defender features one-off satin silver exterior complete with an etching of Red Wharf Bay on its fender. Interior appointments are similar with black leather seating complete with a map of Red Wharf Bay as well the the number two million. At auction’s end, the high bidder will not only own a fantastic tribute to one of the most iconic vehicles of our time but also a plaque with the signatures of all those involved in the creation.
