Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Your computer has a paint job similar to a Ferrari. Your phone looks like an alien communication device. Your wallet is made of recycled rubber. You clearly aren’t a person content with coloring in the lines or thinking inside the box when it comes to design, so why should your speakers be so… conventional? Snap out of the fiberboard sound tomb you’re used to with these speakers that think outside the box.

This content is brought to you by the new Hyundai Elantra which helps you “Snap Out” of your routine to live your best life.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Hive Modular Speaker System

Man solves many problems by simply adding more of something (horsepower, wood, steel, the list goes on and on) and the Hive Speaker System is no different. If When you need more sound (what man doesn’t), simply connect more modular Hive pieces until you’re satisfied – or you run out of drywall.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Munny Speakers

If you’re looking for speakers that come alive, look no further than these hacked Kid Robot Munny speakers. Two of the Munny dolls were defaced, literally, and fit with Creative audio speakers. This is one set of dolls you’ll gladly display.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Butt Speakers

Until we were introduced to these butt speakers, we would have thought it was impossible for any sort of soothing sound to emanate from an ass. Smack dat ass to turn it on and off; wax on, wax off to control the volume.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Washington Speaker Docking Station Lamp

Equal parts lamp, iPod dock, found art and speaker, Etsy user bugcicle’s one of a kind creations are the roadmap to a more interesting living room – and a more enjoyable sound experience.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

ikyaudio Red Lobester Audio Speakers

PVC pipe, normally confined to a bland off white color and contents of the liquid nature, gets turned into a piece of functional art by way of a custom paint job and a pair of 3 inch magneisum/aluminum alloy full range drivers.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Mannequin Speakers

When it comes to what we’re calling the iBod, a picture is really worth a thousand words. From what we hear though, the tactile response is on par with the audio quality – a little on the a little on the artificial side, but definitely worth it.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Pnoe Horn

Suessian in appearance, audiophilian in performance, the Pnoe Horn is a room dominating combination of hard science and high design. A decade in the making, it’s sound quality is as uncompromising as it is physically large.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Ceramic Speakers

Combining seemingly unrelated elements like cork, aluminum, cast iron, porcelain and Baltic birch plywood could have gone horribly awry, but in the capable hands of Joey Roth they’re turned into some of the most gorgeous, high-end speakers we’ve ever seen.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Woofer Speaker System

If you have trouble deciding between your dog and your iPhone for the title of man’s best friend, the Woofer Speaker System (pun intended) is right up your alley. With a 60watt – 280watt, 4ohm speaker, it’s bark is definitely louder than it’s bite.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Klipsch Lightspeaker

Straight from Klipsch Q Division comes their new whole house audio system and it looks like a light bulb. The wireless speakers install into recessed cans as the bulbs you hate changing, but since these are rated to look and sound good for the next 15 years, you’ll only have to change them once.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Giant iPod Headphone Speakers

While you quickly dismissed the “stock” sound system that came with your latest iDevice for comfort reasons, it’s a whole different ball game when they get super-sized into desktop speakers. Just don’t try putting them into your ears.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

Ampoids Altoid Speaker Amp

If you only get to carry one curiously strong thing in your pocket, is it going to be mints or a portable amp and speaker? Hook up your device of choice with the included cable, flip the switch and share the party in your pants with everyone around you.

Speakers That Think Outside The Box

I like the hive idea, although I do wonder how they would sound with a non-round cone.

  2. Posted by Aleclare on March 8th, 2011 at 10:13 am

Gawd, those ikyaudio things have been on my wish list forever. For the moment, I’m blasting my tiny tunes with an X-mini which does a hell of a job for its size, but I’ve been torn between upgrading to those red pipe monsters (so frikken awesome and they suit my style to a pvc…I hear the bass on those suckers is quite amazing) or these: http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/pd/productID.224482900/parentCategoryID.35096300/categoryId.35209900

I like the light speakers best, i like when stuff is hidden and disguised as other things!

The I bod is awesome, as well as the I pod buds.

  5. Posted by scott on March 8th, 2011 at 10:23 am

I would love to hear the pnoe horn.It looks like it might have some serious potential to break things.

  6. Posted by marc on March 8th, 2011 at 10:30 am

Loved the Hive Modular Speaker System ! I’d be curious to test the giant headphones, nice design btw :)

  7. Posted by Alexandra L'Ecuyer on March 8th, 2011 at 10:32 am

The woofer speaker system looks like the most delightful sound device an inhabitant of earth coud dream of!

I would definitely love to caress his white carcass of polyester in a resonant embrace. Wow.

  8. Posted by Stacy on March 8th, 2011 at 10:32 am

The Pnoe Horn is so bold. This would be the centerpiece of my entire home!

  9. Posted by Stuart on March 8th, 2011 at 10:41 am

If I could get the pnoe boe i don’t think I would ever buy a pair of speakers again in my life

  10. Posted by Kevin on March 8th, 2011 at 10:54 am

The giant iPod headphone speakers are a really cool idea but it seems like the Pnoe Horn could seriously blow you away.

  11. Posted by Samuel on March 8th, 2011 at 10:58 am

The Pnoe looks awesome. If there was some way to modify it so you could sit inside, that would be a great way to listen. Almost like one of those Finnish egg pod chairs that happens to be a world class speaker.

  12. Posted by Jason on March 8th, 2011 at 11:01 am

The ceramic speakers are just sick!
The porcelain and the aluminum just match so well

I like the bowers and wilkins zeppelin and the B&O beosounds

  13. Posted by Jerry on March 8th, 2011 at 11:31 am

I love all of these ideas. Bringing together Art and Sound has always been on my to do list. As an artist myself I find the use of everyday and repurposed objects turned into speakers to be an excellent idea. Creative minds will always keep our day to day existence interesting. I’m tired of boxes for speakers why not a Manniquin or an end table?
    Genius!

  14. Posted by brett on March 8th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

the ibod is great, it would be the centerpiece of a room. How great would it be if you walked into a party and all of these speakers were pumping out music?

  15. Posted by Nicholas Constant on March 8th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

THe Munny’s are cool as all getout, and Roth’s ceremic speakers have been on my mind and out of my budget since they showed up a while back. I’d be happy to rock any of them, honestly. Great roundup.

  16. Posted by Kavan on March 8th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I’m in college and the lobster speakers would like dope in my dorm

  17. Posted by Gabe on March 8th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

    THe hive speakers are sick.

  18. Posted by Jesse on March 8th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

My personal favorite is the Hive Modular Speaker System. It looks like there’s some customization to it and it would look cool on the wall.

  19. Posted by Dan on March 8th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

The hive audio speakers strike my fancy. I have Kicker L7 solo baric sub-woofers in my truck and they are square. The hexagon design is very intriguing. The pvc speakers are great too because I work with pvc irrigation piping all day, and think this is an amazing idea!

  20. Posted by Jake B on March 8th, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I really like the ceramic speakers – a nice mix of raw and refined there.

  21. Posted by Ike on March 8th, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Butt Speakers, eh? I’d tap that ;)

  22. Posted by Omar on March 8th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

The Altoid speakers are pretty legit. Can come in hella handy when your just trying to show someone some music.

  23. Posted by Jeff on March 8th, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I think the woofer speaker takes the cake for literary creativity.

  24. Posted by Sinergy on March 8th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

For the bum and the iBod, whoever buys either of those obviously doesn’t get laid enough. The rest are pretty sweet, though.

  25. Posted by Tolli on March 8th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I haven’t made my favorite out of the box speakers yet. But I will definitely utilize http://www.parts-express.com for the necessary components.

  26. Posted by Johnny on March 8th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Mannequin speaker would be difficult to keep hands off. I would enjoy plugging them in.

  27. Posted by Matthew on March 8th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

I really like the Hive Modular. It would work perfectly for an audiophile’s mancave.

  28. Posted by Aaron on March 8th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

ikyaudio Red Lobester Audio Speakers mainly because is unique and no one will suspect it is an actual speaker at the glance of it.

  29. Posted by Robert Jordan on March 8th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Pnoe Horn gets my vote as most intriguing. Would be very cool if someone would review the speakers in the article. Cool looking speakers like the ikyaudios are all well and good, but how do they sound?

  30. Posted by Kyle on March 8th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Joey Roth’s ceramic speakers look like an amazing combination of style, art and sound.

  31. Posted by Christian on March 8th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Hive modular speakers FTW! What a great (and beautiful) idea!

  32. Posted by John on March 8th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Hive Modular System looks pretty sweet. would wanna try it out and make my walls shake ;D

  33. Posted by Jeremy S on March 8th, 2011 at 7:18 pm

It’s tough, but my favourite has to be the Ceramic speakers. I love the combination of all of the materials. The wood, porcelain, and steel give it a look that’s industrial and durable, but also sleek and modern. Definitely cool.

  34. Posted by vinicius on March 8th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

I’ve done an amplified speaker out of a beer mini keg. It kicks hard and is, of course, my favorite!

  35. Posted by RebelLumberjack on March 8th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

The Hive Modular Speakers look really clean cut, a nice change from your average bulky soundsystem. The ability to add or change their configuration is a nice touch too.

  36. Posted by Kim on March 8th, 2011 at 9:15 pm

Those iPOD headphone ones are really cool. A good idea too because you don’t need a separate dock or anything. Just plug them in :D

The lights are awesome too. Definitely added to my list of dream house items.

These are all pretty unique though. Any one of them would fit my taste.

  37. Posted by David on March 8th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

the light speakers are definitely amazing
but I think I am going to have to go with the butt speakers idea

  38. Posted by mike.spearman on March 8th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Obviously I like the Mannequin Speakers

  39. Posted by ryan roys on March 8th, 2011 at 10:01 pm

I thought the Hive Modular Speaker System looks pretty sweet

  40. Posted by Erik on March 8th, 2011 at 10:01 pm

The Hive speakers for sure. Love the modular design and modern look.

  41. Posted by Atlrrific on March 8th, 2011 at 10:03 pm

My favorite speaker are the Mannequin Speakers.
I like the way they use the sexuality as a way where you can hear music. It’s like the women body express music, beautiful music than each man want to hear.
I think is one of the most creative works , and symbolize a cool idea. Ideal to make part of the house. A speaker with a implicit purpose.

  42. Posted by joe on March 8th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

i like the giant ipod headphone speakers! haha it’d be really funny to walk around the streets or to be ob a bus or something and holding them up to your ears! really fun idea of a speaker system!!!!!

  43. Posted by KishanPatel on March 8th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

My favorite speakers are the Klipsch Lightspeakers. The design is simple, yet effective, with a modern touch. Also, keeping the speakers out of the way adds to the simplicity of a modern home.

  44. Posted by Jason on March 8th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

    the ipod speakers look awesome

  45. Posted by Alex on March 8th, 2011 at 10:18 pm

The woofer ceramic looks like a good time, but the shitty butt, looks like a pain in the ass.

  46. Posted by Watson on March 8th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

    Hive modular looks futuristic

  47. Posted by Jessica on March 8th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

My favorite IDEA for speakers would have to be a speaker chandelier that hangs from the ceiling and all.

  48. Posted by marcy1293 on March 8th, 2011 at 10:29 pm

i like the idea of one of those old time adventure boxes (like the ones you see on those fake safaris, with the spray paint lettering,)
    thats what i want

  49. Posted by idle brody on March 8th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

The Washington Speakers are my favorite. It reminds me of traveling with just a backpack and how much freedom you can have.

  50. Posted by Devin on March 8th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Although I think the Munny Speakers are pretty neat, I think that the Ceramic Speakers are very contemporary and clean cut. Perfect look for a modern office space

  51. Posted by Lewis Jones on March 8th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

The hives are really awesome, but I love the idea of the light speakers, the creativity of the large headphones, and the look of the ceramic ones.

  52. Posted by claxonjackson on March 8th, 2011 at 10:59 pm

The Hive Modular is completely fantastic, i love the simplicity and the options that one could create with it. Perfect for my living room.

  53. Posted by IAmTheReplicant on March 9th, 2011 at 12:07 am

Hive, no question, although it makes me want to spend most of my money building colonies all over my house and making them fight for my amusement.

  54. Posted by Adam on March 9th, 2011 at 12:16 am

Those oversized i-pod earphones are freshhhh. :) all of them are mad chill tho.

  55. Posted by Mitch on March 9th, 2011 at 12:23 am

Definitely enjoy the mannequin speakers. I feel like many people would look at that and think it obscene, but I am really intrigued by taking something so sexual and making it a part of everyday, normal life.

  56. Posted by brandonwa on March 9th, 2011 at 12:28 am

I really like the hive modular speakers. Cool concept to be able to add and subtract at will.

  57. Posted by Matt on March 9th, 2011 at 12:29 am

The hive speakers look pretty awesome and would fit nice on an empty wall. I could really use some since my laptop speakers aren’t too great and my headphones break a lot.

  58. Posted by Adam Sharrard on March 9th, 2011 at 12:34 am

The Hive Modular Speaker is definitely awesome. i really like the concept of just adding more speakers, and plus it looks really cool.

  59. Posted by Cameron on March 9th, 2011 at 12:37 am

Those hive speakers are fantastic looking. I can’t help but wonder how they sound though!

  60. Posted by JD on March 9th, 2011 at 12:39 am

That Pnoe Horn looks insane, like something that would literally blow you away.

  61. Posted by Lloyd on March 9th, 2011 at 12:43 am

The Hive and the Klipsch Lightspeaker look awesome. The hive would look particularly good if you were working in a sound studio. Those surrounded by sound dampening sponges would look like you had your own musical Honeycomb.

That or the butt speakers. The hilarity sells them on their one. Do you plug things in the hole?

  62. Posted by Carl on March 9th, 2011 at 12:51 am

I really like the modular system, since it gives a much better opportunity for individualism and versatility in a party scene than some of the others. The ceramic ones look great as computer speakers, and the Pnoe horn looks great for large settings (although a little impractical for an apartment or something.)If I were to buy a set for my own small-scale use, I’d probably go with the Red Lobster speakers anyway. If I were to buy an entirely new sound system though, I’d probably buy the modular system.

  63. Posted by Leanne on March 9th, 2011 at 12:54 am

I would have a hard time choosing which set I liked the most! I’m a really huge fan of the ceramic speakers and the portable altoid box speakers. They’re all so original! Job well done to the designers. :)

  64. Posted by bryan on March 9th, 2011 at 1:03 am

I like the hive system. really goes outside the box with not only the ability to add more but also with wall decoration. Great idea

  65. Posted by Garrett on March 9th, 2011 at 1:09 am

I really like the Hive, the Giant Ipod Earphone Speakers, and the Pnoe Horn, but all these speakers are really cool though!

  66. Posted by Jjlkb on March 9th, 2011 at 1:09 am

I think the Hive is just sweet looking, I definitely wouldn’t mind having a ton of those in my room.

  67. Posted by The Larch on March 9th, 2011 at 1:51 am

I need me some butt speakers!

  68. Posted by Andrew Dowd-Reilly on March 9th, 2011 at 1:59 am

    The Butt speakers ftw!

  69. Posted by Tyler on March 9th, 2011 at 2:20 am

I love the hive speakers. They look so retro and i love them. But not in a hipster way.

  70. Posted by Alex on March 9th, 2011 at 2:26 am

Customizable, industrial looking Hive speakers that could cover my whole wall?
Nothing could be better than that.

  71. Posted by Carlos on March 9th, 2011 at 2:40 am

i liked the hive modular speakers

  72. Posted by Mihnea on March 9th, 2011 at 2:41 am

the red lobester are my pick, they are just out of the ordinary, looking like garbage that you forgot to take out.

  73. Posted by Katina on March 9th, 2011 at 3:14 am

I like the Giant iPod Headphone Speakers. I think they’re so fun, and a great spin on a common product we see used all the time.

  74. Posted by Spencer on March 9th, 2011 at 3:46 am

I would love to cover my wall with hive speakers

  75. Posted by Sal on March 9th, 2011 at 3:52 am

Gotta love the Hive system. I can get creative with the layout!

  76. Posted by john k on March 9th, 2011 at 8:05 am

favorite for sure is the Washington Speaker Docking Station Lamp, has the old beat up look, but slap on a new ipod and its a good contrast.

  77. Posted by dan on March 9th, 2011 at 8:56 am

The ceramic speakers have a nice innovative yet classic look to them. Definitely like those the best.

  78. Posted by Danny on March 9th, 2011 at 9:01 am

gotta go with the “woofer speaker system,” something that looks that classy deserves a spot in my place

  79. Posted by Ted on March 9th, 2011 at 9:05 am

The Hive modular system looks really cool. But I wonder how they would connect to each other.

  80. Posted by PJ on March 9th, 2011 at 9:18 am

I think the Pnoe Horn is great. It’s so… Noticeable. I’d love to have it in my living room, run my electric instruments through it.

  81. Posted by Sam on March 9th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

The hive thing looks awesome, but I have doubts concerning sound quality. If you arranged them in the way that the picture shows, you’d probably have no stereo image, and with all those different sources the phase problems would be tremendous. You’d have to listen in the exact sweet spot, if there even is one. Walking past them would sound really weird.

That being said, aesthetically they’re sweet as shit.

  82. Posted by dauzu on March 9th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Hive Modular and Woofer Speaker System are my favorite 2. I would definitely like to experience the sound wave this giant piece could bring to me!

  83. Posted by Sam on March 9th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

I consider the Pnoe Horn as brilliant. It reminds me of the Swiss Alphorn, which is my home-country :) Just a wonderful speaker, my favorite!

  84. Posted by Jason on March 9th, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I have to go w/ the Ibod just for the sheer awesomeness and well, let’s face it, it is a fantastic conversation piece!

  85. Posted by Tyler on March 9th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

The Pnoe horn is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t imagine how much they cost though.

  86. Posted by Garrett on March 9th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

The Washington is awesome. I have always loved the look of old, weathered maps. Throw in the ability to blast some Black Keys and I am sold.

  87. Posted by Tosh on March 9th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I love those Hive speakers, i could see myself having an entire room, floors and the ceiling, packed with those to make it look like i have a bee hive room.

  88. Posted by Ben Dover on March 9th, 2011 at 5:20 pm

    WHAT? No Stiletto speakers?

I’m glad the guy that came up with the Butt Speakers decided to make speakers instead of headphones.

I really like the Klipsch recessed light speakers. Plus they are wireless. But if they are wireless, how does the light come on? Batteries?

  89. Posted by Chris on March 9th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Hear this. the ceramic and klipsch are nice.

  90. Posted by Tyler on March 9th, 2011 at 5:34 pm

The mannequin speakers are the best. I mean…that’s perfect for Hooters. Delightfully tacky.

  91. Posted by Tom on March 9th, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I like the washington lamp speakers, Sweet!

  92. Posted by Matt Tepe on March 9th, 2011 at 5:56 pm

The Ceramic Speakers are beautiful. I’d like to pair them with the Woofer Speaker to complete the system.

  93. Posted by Brice B. on March 9th, 2011 at 6:12 pm

My favorite is the Red Lobester. I love seafood but I can’t often afford to go out and eat it. Luckily, I like fish sticks…

  94. Posted by Brian on March 9th, 2011 at 6:23 pm

The Munny’s are awesome, but the Ceramic Speaker just looks amazing…I need a napkin for the drool.

  95. Posted by Barry Huddleston on March 9th, 2011 at 6:33 pm

I agree I like the washington lamp speakers

  96. Posted by Mike on March 9th, 2011 at 6:36 pm

The Washington speakers. Elegant and decorative. Having options – world, US, etc – would really be amazing.

  97. Posted by Dave on March 9th, 2011 at 7:18 pm

I think the Woofer is the best and has potential to sell the most with choice of breed.

  98. Posted by Walt on March 9th, 2011 at 8:41 pm

The pnoe horn would be a great conversation piece and great for some serious listening to music. Might break out a window or two in the process!

  99. Posted by John Ferris on March 9th, 2011 at 9:14 pm

I like the Woofer speaker system….

  100. Posted by DJ on March 9th, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I like the Hive speakers the best. An attractive piece of wall art meets function.

  101. Posted by Joe on March 9th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

The Pnoe Horn (doubt I could afford it) and Hive radiate style.

  102. Posted by Josh Shea on March 9th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

lobster speakers rhymes with mobster beakers.

  103. Posted by Brice on March 9th, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I like the Klipsch Lightspeakers. The two in one feature makes less clutter around the house, and will always be used, if not for the speakers, but defiantly for the lights. Ideal for restaurants and businesses. If it lasts for 15 years, before it needs a replacement, than these speakers definitely get my vote.

  104. Posted by MooBoyNYC on March 9th, 2011 at 11:33 pm

The woofer pun is irresistible, should come with bird-shaped tweeters!

  105. Posted by Dan on March 10th, 2011 at 1:11 am

The ampoids altoid speaker amps were amazing and very stylish.

  106. Posted by Bill Gray on March 10th, 2011 at 1:29 am

Gotta be the Red Lobster speakers, hands down.

  107. Posted by Pat on March 10th, 2011 at 1:48 am

As someone raised on the good Doctor Seuss and a fan of old audio gear, I would definitely go for the Pnoe Horn….unfortunately I don’t have a bank to break for it.

  108. Posted by emmanuel on March 10th, 2011 at 1:56 am

    the mannequin speaker sounds awesome!

  109. Posted by Bazza on March 10th, 2011 at 5:01 am

All of these look pretty amazing, but the real test of any speaker is the quality of the sound. I would be very curious to hear some of these as they look the part, but do they sound the part.

  110. Posted by scott on March 10th, 2011 at 7:57 am

I love the idea of PVC pipe being used as speaker housing. I can imagine lots of other shapes/creatures!

Of the things I can’t afford, the Pnoe Horn is by far my favorite. These days, the trend has been to hide speakers as much as possible and this speaker takes the opposite approach. It contributes artistically to the room and from the description, matches its looks with its performance. Out of the things I can afford, the ampoids altoids speaker amp is my favorite. Its small, clever, stylish, and the altoids case protects the amp. I love art, technology, and speakers so I thoroughly enjoyed this article.

  114. Posted by Jason on March 10th, 2011 at 9:53 am

I like the altoid can speakers. My brother works for Wrigleys, and I am sure he has never seen those

  115. Posted by Ross on March 10th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Have to say, the Horn is pretty impressive.

  116. Posted by Michael Magro on March 10th, 2011 at 10:10 am

The Altoids are the best. Conversation piece and easy to carry. Although you may have some trouble getting them through airport security…

  117. Posted by Vince on March 10th, 2011 at 10:38 am

The ipod buds are tight. I could even rig them to a backpack when on the go during a hike!

I honestly thought they were all very interesting and unique but I especially liked the Munny Speakers. Im currently in the market for a good sound system and these definitely would be a fun way of spicing up my room. :)

Washington Speaker Docking Station Lamp is so dope and would be a great way to surprise people in my dorm. It just brings the room together!

My favorite set of ‘out-of-the-box’ speakers is a shirt a friend of mine made: Sown into the fabric were coils wired to a battery-pack in the lower-back. It also had a built in equalizer display!

Too bad it can never be washed :C

The ceramic speakers are brilliant; such a simple concept utilising a range of materials and different shapes to assemble a small work of art. Excellent!

  128. Posted by Cole on March 11th, 2011 at 1:04 am

The iPod headphone Speakers are my favorite. I don’t much care for apple but those are pretty cool. where can i get those?

  130. Posted by Jeremiah on March 11th, 2011 at 2:59 am

The Arcadian Audio Pnoe speakers look ill. I bet they sound great. They better for 24,000 euro price tag.

  131. Posted by Jason Jancosek on March 11th, 2011 at 3:49 am

I’d have to say the desktop ceramic ones pique my interest the most. nearly all of the other ones look to gimicky and perhaps sacrifice substance for style.

  132. Posted by Lauren on March 11th, 2011 at 4:01 am

Ohmaigosh! I LOVE the hive speakers! Those things are wicked cool! The way they can hang in a wall is super cool and it could double as a piece of art!

  142. Posted by Liam on March 12th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

The Red Lobster is easily the most badass-looking of them all. The PVC pipe must have a wicked effect on the sound, and the combo of the twisting lines of the pipe and the sharp, machine-tooled edges just make it look so incredibly cool. It’s like having a little futuristic bright red robot singing to you. And they’re big enough to have a serious amount of sound come out of them, which is always the most important thing.

Basically i am IN LOVE with the Ampoids Altoid Speaker Amp, such a sweet idea seeing as i never go anywhere without my ipod and a pack of gum. So i can just replace the gum with my ‘mints’ and wham bam thank you mam i have 160gb of beats ready to force upon everyone around me. they cannot deny my amazing taste in music. But im a poor poor student so any speakers would be much appreciated… let me win them let me let me……

  150. Posted by Daniel on March 13th, 2011 at 9:23 pm

The Washington Speaker Docking Station Lamp is really sick. The whole design just looks sick.

  151. Posted by Jake Mcguin on March 13th, 2011 at 9:46 pm

How does one get away from the impedence issue with just “hooking up” myriads of speakers in the Hive system. Too many in parallel and you have a shorted output (destructive to an output transformer). Too many in series and an almost open circuit would ensue. I am assuming were talking true Hi-Fi here (all vacuum tube) amps. It would be such a waste of money to use these speaker systems with a solid state system.

  152. Posted by Jesse on March 13th, 2011 at 9:47 pm

I LOVE the Hive speakers. I would absolutely buy those for my apartment.

  153. Posted by Taylor on March 13th, 2011 at 9:54 pm

The Phoe Horn is by far my favorite, being a designer I could do a lot with that accentuating or even possibly being the central focus of a large room, plus the functionality of the whole things is astounding.

  154. Posted by Rob on March 13th, 2011 at 9:58 pm

  155. Posted by Kalvin on March 13th, 2011 at 11:44 pm

  164. Posted by Kyle on March 14th, 2011 at 10:02 am

I am very interested in the Hive Modular Speaker System. When I own my own place, I’m going to shoot for a white, clean, crisp look. I’m in love with the way modern design is going nowadays and the one red anomaly is just beautiful among the black. It just seems like a very clean idea, given the wiring most likely goes through the wall behind it. I can’t imagine it sounding the absolute best out of the group, given the speakers are flat and not cone-shaped, but it does look like you would be able to move them around and point them to wherever you’d like.

    GREAT DESIGN!

  165. Posted by Albert C. on March 14th, 2011 at 10:02 am

The modular hive wall speakers look awesome! Those would look great in a recording studio application…

  174. Posted by David on March 14th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

The light speakers are the best – seen AND heard, just not how you expect!

  175. Posted by Craig on March 14th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I like the Mannequin. The Novelty of the idea is genius. Is the Sub-Woofer maybe hidden in her butt???? LOL LOL. I also like the idea that it blends the female form with music, just as women have many “Tones” that set their personality, so the music you choose to share through this unique system will define it’s and your personality. Great Idea.

My favorites are definitely the klipsch speakers. I think the best speaker is the one you don’t see, only hear. When you’re in an elevator or supermarket, do you typically look for the speakers? You’re just glad you have the sound they present you. Failing that the hive speakers are definitely a runner up, because easy modified tech is some of the most innovative there is.

Those ceramic speakers ooze class. Keeping such a simple design with strong materials has always sat just right with me. For that reason, we’ll never see a pair of nice speakers coupled with a machine that doesn’t encompass the same core values. Find a photo without an apple product as the player…I dare you.

The first one to really grab me were the over-sized ear buds. The generation’s all about irony and going back to basics whether people really agree or not, and they really speak to me about fundamental design and an icon of our time.

Also an awesome conversation starter! I would kill for a pair of those buds.
