What to Drink This Weekend: Soft Shock Gin & Tonic

Looking for a new cocktail to try out this weekend? Want to wind down with a fresh new drink? We’ve got you covered. Here’s what you should drink this weekend.

Low-ABV and sessionable cocktails are all the rage these days. And the Gin & Tonic is a stone cold classic. So, this slightly less boozy version dubbed the Soft Shock is an excellent option for the hotter months. The Soft Shock cuts down on the Gin and uses low-ABV Fino Sherry to keep the drink balanced and punchy. Plus, the addition of fresh lime juice and mint adds a summery breeziness to this classic poolside cocktail.

To get the most out of this drink, make sure you’re using fresh citrus and herbs and invest in some solid sherry. Plus, it helps if you opt for a more botanical, modern gin to really elevate the botanical element in this riff on the G&T.

Soft Shock Gin & Tonic Ingredients

Gin – For this slightly more sessionable edition of a G&T, you’ll want to have a quality gin on hand. You can opt for the classic Tanqueray London Dry Gin but we’d recommend keeping a bottle of Roku Japanese Gin or Barr Hill Gin.

Sherry – This is a reminder that you should keep some sherry on hand, especially for lower-ABV mixed drinks. In this case, you’ll be using fino sherry, a drier fortified wine. We’d recommend the easily accessible and excellent Lustau Fino or Tio Pepe Fino.

Lime Juice – Juice some fresh limes for this refreshing cocktail and save a wheel for your garnish.

Simple Syrup – If you must, you can buy some simple syrup or you can make your own and batch it for future drinks.

Mint – Last but certainly not least is some fresh mint. Make sure it’s clean and fresh to get the best out of this cocktail.
