If you’ve followed this column for a long time now, you’ll likely know that my principle drink-making philosophy is simple (almost) always better. I will always celebrate high-quality, low-effort cocktails. And I was thrilled to see our feature on The Essential 3-Ingredient Cocktails, one of which was the Dark ‘n Stormy.
I’m typically more of a Negroni or Old Fashioned fan but I always love ordering a Dark ‘n Stormy when I go out. And it’s an extremely easy drink to make at home! Originally concocted by sailors in the early 1900s, this no-frills drink is refreshing, flavorful, and timeless. So, let’s embrace the warm weather of early spring and make a Dark ‘n Stormy this weekend.
Dark ‘N’ Stormy Ingredients
Rum – A Dark ‘n Stormy traditionally calls for dark rum, specifically Goslings Black Seal Rum. In fact, Goslings has the legal right to the cocktail’s name so any variation is by definition not a Dark ‘n Stormy. But, if you want to mix up your rum options we’d suggest trying Appleton Estate Reserve Blend or Papa’s Pilar.
Lime Juice – As always, pick up some limes from the grocery store and freshly squeeze them for best results. Store-bought lime juice simply won’t cut it.
Ginger Beer – Goslings actually makes its own Ginger Beer if you want the authentic Dark ‘n Stormy experience. But, whichever Ginger Beer you prefer will do just fine. We’d recommend Barritt’s or Fentimans. You can also experiment with Ginger Ale, particularly one of the spicy varieties like Blenheim.
Dark ‘N’ Stormy Recipe
- Combine 2 ounces of rum and 1/2 ounce of lime juice to an ice-filled highball glass and stir to combine.
- Top with roughly 3 ounces of ginger beer.
- Garnish with a lime wheel.
