The BMW 2002 is a legend in automotive circles. Small, quick, maneuverable, and classically handsome, it’s the father of the modern BMW sports sedan. This one that’s now up for auction is truly special. It’s a 1974 model that’s one of 1,672 made, and it has the 2002 TII’s fuel-injected turbo four engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission, that combined with the light weight and low center of gravity, make it a hoot to helm. The 170 horsepower might not seem like a lot, but its sub-Mazda Miata weight of 2,315 pounds certainly makes up for any perceived deficit. The exterior is a beautiful Chamonix white with special BMW graphics, and there’s also Alpina turbine wheels, a single exhaust, air dam, fender extensions, and a rear deck spoiler. The pristine interior with sport seats and manual windows has nothing to distract you from the purist driving experience. It should command a significant price that’s more than worth it for the serious Bimmer collector.
