If you told us a week ago that we were going to be excited for a big screen adaptation of a tennis match, we definitely wouldn’t believe you. Not to shit on tennis or anything, we just didn’t think it would translate well to the silver screen. But here we are, eagerly awaiting the release of Battle of the Sexes. The movie tells the story of Bobby Riggs challenging Billie Jean King to one of the highest profile tennis matches in history. Since the match took place in 1973, the women’s liberation movement played a pretty big part of King’s motivation in agreeing to play the match, and we can’t think of an actress better to convey that than Emma Stone. She has a natural wit and confidence that should perfectly portray King in the days leading up to the match. Steve Carell, on the other hand, is the perfect guy to play with the bombastic chauvinism of Bobby Riggs. With that combination, this should shape up to be a comedy with some real stakes.
