Everyone knows that Google is working on self-driving cars, but there’s going to be another group competing with them because Volvo and Uber are now building autonomous cars. The two companies signed an agreement to establish a joint project—along with coughing up a combined $300M investment—that will incorporate all the latest developments in autonomously driving cars onto a base vehicle that will be manufactured by Volvo. Uber is going to purchase the base vehicle from Volvo and add their own self-developed autonomous driving system, while Volvo is using the same base vehicle for their own autonomous car strategy. Ultimately, it only makes sense that the two companies will compare notes and integrate all the features that work into one functional vehicle that can drive itself. We don’t know how successful the partnership will be, but we do know that more people working on self-driving cars means we’re one step closer to a stress free commute home.
