Hands-On: Barocook Flameless Cooking System

Certain conditions make building a fire a challenge when you’re out camping or exploring. When you’re stuck in your tent with rain beating down around you, you don’t always want to turn to a granola bar for a meal. Barocook is the flameless cooking system looking to give you a few more options.

What Is It?

A series of food containers that use water and a heating pack to cook/warm food. It works without a flame or electricity so wind, ventilation, and location are not an issue.

Who Is It Made For?

Campers, hikers, and those who just enjoy the great outdoors. Besides that, there are a ton of random situations where Barocook could come in handy: Tailgating, power outages, lunch at your desk, and lots more.

How Does It Feel?

Simple and lightweight. It won’t be confused with some top-of-the-line cookware, but the pieces are durable and can easily be tossed in your backpack without adding much weight.

What We Liked:

It heats up fast. Within 5 minutes you could feel the warmth through the outer sleeve and steam shot out when the lid was not secured. Also, just the fact that we were cooking at our desk without anything plugged in or a desktop fire going (always a plus), was pretty damn cool. The price isn’t bad either.

What We Didn’t Like:

Measuring water is really, really awkward. Each bag contains a heating pack but then the bag doubles as your measuring cup for the water. The issue is, the bag isn’t see-through and the max line and the minimum line on the outside are extremely close to each other. This was just poorly thought-out. It can also be tricky to adapt things that require water to be added since you are not boiling off water like you would over a flame. It’s much more useful for simply reheating dishes.

Coolest Feature:

It’s beyond simple. You put a heat pack in the container, add water, place the food and lid on top, and you’re chowing down in minutes.

Would We Buy It?

While its design isn’t perfect, it works exactly as promised. The ability to enjoy a warm meal regardless of where you are is pretty neat and potentially very helpful. We’d definitely recommend picking one up.
