Keep the barrel-aged stouts in your cellar and hide the barleywines in the back of the fridge. It’s summer and it’s time for something light and refreshing. But light and refreshing doesn’t have to mean bland and boring. If you’re looking for something new to drop in that cooler during the dog days, we’re here to help. Here are the new summer beers we’re digging this year. Pick some up before your next cookout, tailgate, or other outdoor event. Take a sip, wipe your brow, and repeat all summer long.
We can’t tell you how many cans of Hell or High Watermelon we’ve crushed in summers past. The watermelon-flavored wheat ale from 21st Amendment is a staple this time of year. So it should come as little surprise that we’re pretty excited about Watermelon Funk, a new watermelon beer from the San Francisco brewery. Watermelon Funk is a sour version of Hell or High Watermelon and it’s perfect for those who enjoy beers that make them pucker up. Link
Pilsners have enjoyed a moment recently, as beer lovers with double dry-hop fatigue have turned to the classic style for something crisp and easy. That’s great news for summer since there are few styles better suited for the warmer months. For an absolute winner, turn to Crooked Stave. Long known for their funky offerings, Crooked Stave is set to release their first packaged Pilsner in a matter of days. In collaboration with Casey Brewing & Blending, Von Pilsner is a clean example of a timeless style and it should be in your fridge this summer if you can get it.
Okay, admittedly, this isn’t the light beer we promised in the intro. In our defense, it’s a beer that tastes like a pina colada and we can think of few drinks more summer-friendly than that. Part of Funky Buddha’s Living Barrel Series, Rum Barrel-Aged Pina Colada is an imperial cream ale made with real pineapple and coconut. It was also aged in Jamaican rum casks for months to deliver a true pina colada taste. And since no one is better at making their beers taste like other things than Funky Buddha, you know this will taste just like an island vacation. Link
A tart and refreshing gose is an absolute winner when the temperature pushes triple digits. When you toss in the ever so juicy citra hop, well, we’re sold. Hi-Wire recently released Citra Gose and you need it in your life this summer. An incredibly aromatic sour beer, Citra Gose is perfect with some grilled fish or lighter fare. Plus, just look at the can. It just screams “poolside.” Link
Dogfish Head has been doing weird beers before weird beers were even a thing. So by their standards, Lupu-Luau IPA is fairly tame. That said, it’s easily one of our favorite offerings they’ve ever put out. Brewed with toasted coconut and dehydrated coconut water, the IPA boasts a citrus aroma and a coconut finish. It’s the next best thing to booking a trip to Hawaii this summer. Link
Looks like it’s the summer of watermelon-forward beers, as Founders has released Green Zebra, a beer fairly similar to 21st Amendment’s Watermelon Funk mentioned earlier. Slightly tart and just a tad sweet, Green Zebra is a gose with a juicy watermelon nose. Part of the Artist Series, Green Zebra will be on shelves until September. Link
No drink is as summery as a tall glass of lemonade. Our only issue with the sugary, tart beverage is its lack of alcohol. Consider that problem solved. Omnipollo teamed up with the mad men at Evil Twin to brew an IPA inspired by the summertime refresher. Hit with some lactose for body and blended with lemon juice, Old Fashioned Lemonade IPA is as close to Country Time as you can get while still obtaining a buzz. Link
